BIGGER THAN EVER

We're back, but this time we're bigger.

Marilena Zackheos, aka the Poet in the Leopard Skin Slippers, will be emceeing. Expect a guest appearance by Mexican-Cypriot haiku artist/celebrity motorcyclist Fortino Samano, who will be promoting his latest book, Scrambler, a collection of Cypriot haikus written on sabbatical from the University of Kyoto and due out this November from our local OWK Press.

We welcome most forms of oral expression, but frown upon excessive* lewdness, monkey routines and hogging of the mic.

Entrance is free.

Special thanks to Orestis and Prozak Kafeneio for so generously promoting our brand of civil disobedience.

THE STORY INSIDE YOU: A COLOMBIAN STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

JULIANA ELYSE MARÍN

JULIANA ELYSE MARÍN

Do you struggle to find ideas for stories? Or do you feel you don’t have any stories at all? Then let your creativity flow in this workshop with a Colombian storyteller, where you’ll explore all sorts of ways—writing, telling, drawing and even acting—to get your story out of your head and into the world. Because everyone has a story to tell and it shouldn’t be kept locked up inside!

The workshop is free, but donations make Juliana's world storytelling tour possible. Space is limited to 10. To register, fill out the form below. For more about Write CY, click here.

If you register and for any reason can't attend the workshop, please let us know at least 3 days before the event.

ABOUT THE STORYTELLER

OPEN MIC NIGHT 9: BETRAYAL

Have you been stabbed in the heart or back recently? We're looking for some hardcore betrayal——poems, stories, songs, rants, manifestos or laments of 5 minutes or less will do. Anything over that, we'll truss you up like a turkey and hang you from the rafters.

Open Mic Night 9 is going down on Wednesday 22 March, 2017 20:00-23:00 at Prozak Kafeneio. If you've got material to perform, please sign up by 19:45. Check out some of our past performances here.

€2 euro donations to the Write CY Solvency Fund will be collected in a halloumi jar by Cypriot haiku artist Fortino Samano.

Like what we're doing? Don't keep us a secret.

OPEN MIC NIGHT 8: WORLD GONE WRONG

As the world goes to hell around you, you could use a night of orally delivered debauchery. We welcome poetry, short fiction, true stories, original songs, performance art and anything at all on the unfairly maligned and démodé practice of ritual head shrinking. We usually start at 20:00 and finish by 23:00, just in time to hit the bars. You can talk to us in any language you want, even Klingon, though we prefer Cypriot, English and Greek.

Check out our past performances here.

Pass us on to your friends here. (Seriously, pass us on.)

OPEN MIC NIGHT 7

Ever had your garbage can stolen?

We know just how you feel.

Join us at Prozak Kafeneio for a night of reminiscence, condolence, unwarranted moaning, fiery speeches, well-meaning lies and amplified poetry. We promise you nothing short of a 3-hour spectacle on an empty stomach on par with anything Wagner ever created for consumption in 8 fully fed.

And beer and zivania on a cold night.

And Cypriot haikouthkia.

What more could you ask for?

Seriously what?

For general guidelines, past performances and a stunning mp3 featuring Cypriot celebrity haiku artist Fortino Samano: click here.

As usual, Mr. Samano, a big fellow, will be collecting our €2 donations at a table laden with finger foods and empty beer bottles.

LIVE STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

Photo: Dasha Guliaeva

Instructor: Max Sheridan
Cost: €5

Community storytelling is experiencing a revival worldwide. It isn’t hard to see why. Sharing stories publicly is an antidote to our increasingly virtual existences, making our communities more connected and lively places. This live storytelling workshop will show storytellers how to transform personal experiences into meaningful stories sharable within their communities and beyond. We’ll be exploring our own storytelling voices and narrative elements like plot structure and pacing, while preparing ourselves for the challenges of live performance. By the end of the workshop*, participants will have the tools and confidence to prepare a five-minute story they can perform at the next Write CY Open Mic Night at Prozak on Wed 21 Dec, 2016.

Space is limited to 10.

*A follow-up meeting two weeks after the workshop can be arranged with the instructor where students will have the chance to rehearse their stories and get feedback.

OPEN MIC NIGHT 6: REVENGE OF THE MERCEDES

Did you miss Open Mic Night 5? Then this is your chance to hear celebrity haiku artist Fortino Samano performing more unmarketable Cypriot haikus, future primitive Alexis Karkotis reading his hallucinatory ethnographic reports from the future, and Katherine Toumbourou telling a story that she actually has more than ten minutes to prepare. Look also for new stories from storytellers James "Sleazy Bristol" Mackay and Vanja Radivojevic-Savva. Rumor has it that Max Sheridan will even be singing an original song called Mercedes. Join us for all that and more original poetry, short fiction and performance art in Cypriot, English and Greek on Wednesday 16 November, 2016 8-11PM at Prozak Kafeneio. €2 donations will be collected by Fortino Samano himself. Don't mess with him.

Important: Anyone can perform original work. If you want to perform your work, please get there a little earlier and sign up by 7:30PM. Click here for the official guidelines in English and Greek.

KIDS TELL STORIES

WORKSHOP 1

Will it be The Dragon That Only Used Peppermint Toothpaste or Michalis and the Lollipop Tree? At Write CY we've been batting around ideas for our first storytelling workshop for kids—KIDS TELL STORIES—but we haven't arrived at anything yet. But it's sure been fun getting there. We can't wait to tell our story and we can't wait to hear the little ones telling theirs.

This isn't something we can invite you to, because it's for the 5-year-olds of Elenion Elementary School, but it's something we'd like you to know about in case you're a parent or children's organization and you're looking for something similar.

KIDS TELL STORIES will be happening at Write CY Thursday 3 November, 2016 10-11AM in Greek, hopefully the first of many such workshops in both Greek and English.

Thanks to Elena Djiambazi at Elenion for agreeing to do this and for training the little ones a before they march across the moat.

If you're interested in organizing a storytelling workshop for kids age 5-10, contact Max at max@writecy.com or call 22105099.

OPEN MIC NIGHT 5

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Open Mic Nights happen every month or so at Prozak Kafeneio in Nicosia. They're free and open to the public, but we do ask that, if you can, you make a €2 donation to WRITE CY. Here's how it works:

1) You read or perform your own work (no covers) in Cypriot, English or Greek.
2) Don't take much longer than 5 minutes.
3) Be polite and don't talk while other people are reading or performing.

THE MAJESTIC MUSIC TREE

The Majestic Music Tree is an artistic group of educators that provides music educational and storytelling performances for children, teenagers and adults. This tree grows everywhere; in festivals, schools, museums and parks!

ELENITSA GEORGIOU

While I was young my grandmother’s songs, lullabies and stories filled my days. I was (and still am) a girl who's always thirsty and passionate about knowledge. Some call it a case of 'the curious cat'!

With a suitcase hanging from my hand and my magical pair of red shoes, I left Cyprus to study abroad. Firstly, I put inside the bag a Bachelor of Music and then I was off to UK with a Master of Music and the Creative Arts in Education falling into the suitcase. Workshops, seminars, festivals—I went everywhere my heart led me, just like we follow the smell of an aromatic, delicious dish, with the eyes closed. Music education workshops, mime and physical theatre, singing in traditional music events, storytelling, etc.

I started 'spinning my red thread on the wheel' of tale writing in 2011. Since then I have been organizing and leading interactive performances and workshops related to fairy tales and music for young and 'older' children at schools (in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture), festivals (1st and 2nd Storytelling Festival and Fengaros Festival), museums (Folk Art Museum, Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, Decorated Bread Museum) and other art spaces.  When inspiration knocks on my door, I smile and my pencils are set on fire. Again and again and again!

OPEN MIC NIGHT 4

Join us at Prozak Kafeneio on May 21, 2016 8-11PM for live stories, poetry, memoir, music and more. What do we mean by "more"? Not a guest appearance by Peter Wyngarde (above), that's for sure, but just about anything else.

Open Mic 4 will be featuring 10 storytellers chosen from a hat with an interlude where anyone can read anything (within limits.) What do we mean by "within limits"? Well, look at Peter Wyngarde's moustache (above.) Would you wear it? That's kind of what we mean. Anything goes, folks, but nothing in bad taste.

We wonder: will reigning champion James Mackay return to defend his title? And claim his 3 free drinks? Will Marilena Zackheos appear in her fluffy red Write CY house slippers? What will the prizes be this time? Will we hear some stories in Cypriot? The suspense thickens.

Drop by to find out.
