SCRAMBLER REDUX

BOOK DESIGN: OMIROS PANAYIDES

BOOK DESIGN: OMIROS PANAYIDES

It’s April and we’re celebrating the second official launch of Fortino Samano’s seminal first book of Cypriot poems and we still don’t really know who the man is.

Since the first launch several new “facts” have emerged, however. Here is what we now know.

Samano’s book Scrambler was published by indie book juggernaut OWK Press, run and operated by former WWF fixer and one-time llama farmer Omiros Panayides.

The launch is happening in Limassol on 21 April, 2018 at a place called Tapper, a disco bar whose dress code has been described as “anything goes as long as you’re wearing spandex and are toting a lion cub”.

Beyond that we have only conjecture.

Stay tuned for 10 new, absolutely kind of true facts about Samano and his book as we near the launch date.

Rock the Dog

Write CY founder and director Max Sheridan is launching his debut novel Dillo at Prozak Kafeneio 29 March 2018. Dillo is the story of 15-year-old oddball Doc Candy, his washed-up, dead-beat father Don, and a bonding trip that turns into a 2000-mile getaway from a pair of psychopathic teenage hitmen. Dillo was published in the US in December 2017 by Shotgun Honey, an imprint of Down and Out Books. Read the first chapter here

50 copies of the book will be on sale at the event. There will be a brief reading by the author and an introduction by James "The Destroying Angel" Mackay.

Scrambler is the first collection of haikus to be published in Cypriot by revolutionary haiku artist/celebrity motorcyclist Fortino Samano. Mysteries still surround the reclusive poet who was rediscovered in 2007 living on the streets of Kyoto trading poems for sake. Poet Marilena Zackheos (Carmine Lullabies) will offer a brief introduction to Samano's contribution to Cypriot letters, while pulp fiction writer Max Sheridan will discuss the rise and fall of the elusive poet provocateur who is better known to yakuza henchmen than to European literary society.

Scrambler was printed in a numbered, limited edition by OWK Press. It is OWK Press's first release. Scrambler was designed by Omiros Panayides and set in GFS Didot Enalea, a Cypriot typeface designed by Aspasia Papadima using GFS Didot as its base.

Join us for the launch of Scrambler at Prozak Kafeneio Saturday 18 November 2017 at 19:30.

THE LAUNCH

George Tardios is one of the most important Greek-Cypriot poets writing today. A literary figure in the UK, his work is not so well known in Cyprus. Buttoned-Up Shapes is Tardios’ first book of poems to be translated into Greek. The collection was published by Armida Publications and Write CY with cover photography by Nicos Philippou, and translated into Greek by Despina Pirketti. The official book launch is happening at Point Centre for Contemporary Art at 6PM on Sunday 8 October 2017, where Tardios will be available for a Q&A and book signing. Stavros Karayanni will give a brief introduction to Tardios’ poetry. Buttoned-Up Shapes was printed in a limited run. Pre-order your copy today and save 10%.

His poetry leaves me with a very sharp brightly-lit memory. It’s a language of images—which works in an intricate way without intrusive cleverness. There’s an economy of sure phrases and radiance. He’s an artist.

THE NOSTALGIC EXILE

PUBLISHED IN WRITE CY STORIES 29 AUGUST 2017

George Tardios still speaks the same Cypriot he was speaking when he was seven, the day he visited his grandmother for the first time in Varosha in 1951 and she promised to will him her brothel.

The memory is as vivid as zivania on a paper cut. Tardios needed a shot of the hard stuff before he sat in front of the camera and started to talk about it sixty years later when we met with writer Stavros Karayanni and publisher Haris Ioannides to catch some of Tardios' stories on video.

AN INTERVIEW WITH GEORGE TARDIOS

(FOR BEST VIEWING, ADJUST PLAYBACK QUALITY TO 720 OR 1080 P.)

George Tardios talks to Stavros Karayanni about his life as a poet in this short interview to celebrate the publication of the bilingual edition of Buttoned-Up Shapes, Tardios' first book of poems to be translated into Greek. Recorded in Kaimakli, Nicosia on 11 July 2017.
