THE NOMADIC WORKSHOP: RHIZOME AESTHETICS & GRASS ROOTS RESISTANCE

THE NOMADIC WORKSHOP
INSTRUCTOR: MARILENA ZACKHEOS
LANGUAGE: ENGLISH
COST: FREE

This 2-hour workshop will familiarize participants with philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of nomadology, a mode of thinking and seeing the world influenced by the concept of nomadic wandering.

Nomadic thinking—like grass or a rhizome—moves and extends between things, creatively subverting hierarchical conventions of society. It has its own aesthetic and, like a flash mob, it is self-organizing in unplanned ways, establishing connections between heterogeneous elements.

We will explore the main concepts behind nomadic thinking, like: the rhizome, cartography, deterritorialization, machinic assemblages, haecceities, short-term memory, the Body Without Organs, becomings, haptic space, and creative lines of flight. We will discuss how we can reimagine the fields of music, photography, and writing by rewriting established conventions.

With this theoretical background, workshop participants will then be given the chance to experiment with nomadic thinking through any artistic medium of their choice (e.g. photography, painting, drawing, collage, fashion design, sculpture, carpentry, graphic art, writing, video, music, dance, theater, interior design).

Educators, academics, activists, and creatives are all welcome. Writers working in any language are also welcome although the workshop’s language of instruction will be English.

This workshop is full, but spots may open up. Fill out the registration form and we'll let you know if a spot opens. If no spots open, we'll contact you as soon as we offer this workshop again.
