READING 101

READING 101

GABRIEL ISAK

GABRIEL ISAK

It's reading time and you're 6 years old and the new kid in school and it's your turn to sit on the teacher's lap and show everyone you can read.

This is probably the most exciting moment of your 2,000 plus days on this earth.

You get settled in and you wait for that book like it's the biggest chocolate Easter bunny you'll ever see. When it's right there in front of you, you touch it. You gauge distances. Acclimate your eyes, which seven years from now will be looking out at all the other books you place in your lap through glasses. But for now everything is crisp and vivid. You're all ready to go.

Almost.

For some reason your 6-year-old brain can't process, all you can think of is how you've got to pee.

It sure ain't fair, but it's a biological fact. That book or your bladder. To pee or not to pee. When you're the new kid in school and it's your turn to read and you can't hold it in, Hamlet never had it so bad.

Listen to Sophia Archontis channel her 6-year-old self in this runaway performance of Open Mic Night 8-cum-cautionary tale for any would-be reading teacher who doesn't heed the call of nature.

LISTEN HERE. (PLEASE GIVE THE AUDIO A MOMENT TO LOAD.)

SOPHIA ARCHONTIS BY DASHA GULIAIEVA
The way I write has been molded by the books I read, for better or for worse. Neil Gaiman and Stephen King have taught me how to tell stories; Terry Pratchett has taught me how to inject hilariously subtle humor into them; Markus Zusak has showed me the wonderful nature of unconventional descriptions; Fredrik Backman the beauty in simple language.
